September Update
In August the Foundation established
the Howard Chair in
Human Nutrition at Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT), with the
first
incumbent with tenure selected as John Nolan, currently the Principal
Investigator of the Macular Pigment Research Group (MPRG) there.
HF Chairman, Dr Alan Howard said
“We have worked with the
MPRG for over six years, and have been impressed by the novelty and
importance
of their research involving macular carotenoids. We wish to
ensure this
work continues on a permanent basis and that WIT continues to develop
as a
leading scientific and academic centre in the south east of
Ireland.”
The Foundation has also agreed to fund
a two year Howard
Fellowship, also at WIT, for Dr. Alfonso Prado-Cabrero, who will study
the
origins of the nutrients in the human eye which make up the protective
eye
pigments. The Fellow has now taken up his post, and the
Foundation wishes
to thank its commercial partners in the manufacturing and marketing
sectors of
macular carotenoid supplementation for their support towards this
Fellowship.
The Foundation has also agreed to
support the establishment
of a new laboratory at Carriganore House on WIT’s west campus, to
be named the
Howard-Darwin Laboratory, offering a unique facility in carotenoid
research. Joint funding and a design is now secured, enabling
construction to proceed.
The Foundation has agreed to support a
play reading event by
the diplomat, historian and writer Henry Butterfield Ryan, who writes

held at the Howard Theatre on the evening of Friday, 17th
July 2015.
